To My Grandparents
|
The future of Philippine nation then uncertain
Pacific War (WW2) just commenced, destroying two pearls precious to some men.
The Pearl Harbor, a military fortress and a tower of power
The Pearl of the Orient, a rich gem and a raw material provider.
Japanese and Americans fought bitterly for supremacy and domination
In a world so strife-torn and full of division
Amid the anarchy, turmoil, upheaval and confrontation
You decided to tie the knot in the war zone.
Military officers in both sides attended the wedding ceremony
As you spent a romantic dinner while string of hostile bullets highlighted the revelry
A honeymoon that was really one of its kind
A nerve-racking moment ready to steal your night.
Young women in your time lived a life of sorrows
Many were raped, and forced to become sex slaves or speared with arrows.
Young men chanced upon by the Allies had two choices
Either to serve as a soldier or to be banished.
We really don't know how you survive the ordeal
History says there's a time you had nothing to eat
Because the enemy blockaded the passage of food into villages
Rice and fruits from the farm fields were robbed to make you starve to death.
Despite all your hardships and pain, in behalf of my siblings, nephews and nieces
I thank you for bringing up our Pappy and Mumsy
We understand that in those trying times, you had no other refuge
But to whisper a little prayer to the Divine Almighty.
